Market Context
Pattern
Curved No
The Sony X85J has a nice just simple pattern. Information technology doesn't look as premium equally the Sony X90J, and it'south mainly plastic, merely it looks nice in most decors. The inputs face to the side, which is overnice, particularly if y'all wall-mount it.
The stand up is nearly identical to the one on the Sony X90J, and information technology supports the Goggle box well, but there's a fleck of wobble. Unfortunately, like the X90J, the anxiety aren't adjustable, just there's an alternate model known as the X89J that has two stand positions. The 43 inch and 50 inch models appear to have a unlike stand pattern, and the anxiety are closer to the center of the screen.
Footprint of the 55 inch stand: 41.9" x 13.3".
Wall Mount VESA 300x300
The back of the Television is almost identical to the Sony X90J. Information technology has a grid-like pattern across most of the back panel, but unlike the X90J, there'southward no brushed aluminum square in the middle. There's a prune on each leg for cable direction. Although pretty basic, it tin can assistance to keep the back of your Television neat.
Borders 0.39" (1.0 cm)
Max Thickness two.87" (7.three cm)
Due to the direct-lit backlight, this TV is a bit thicker than edge-lit TVs, like the Samsung Q60/Q60A QLED.
The Sony X85J has good build quality. Information technology'south entirely plastic, and at that place'due south some noticeable flex on the back panel, especially most the VESA mount and around the bottom edge. There'due south besides a bit of concerning pull around the border. The TV leans a bit, just this isn't noticeable from the forepart at all. The stand supports the Idiot box well overall, merely there'due south a flake of wobble.

Native Contrast 6,308 : 1
Dissimilarity with local dimming N/A
The Sony X85J has fantastic contrast, so blacks look blackness in a dark room. The native contrast of this TV without local dimming is similar to the Sony X90J's dissimilarity with local dimming, but this varies between units.
Note: Nosotros've seen some reports that the 43 inch model has an IPS panel in some regions. If this is the case, we look it to take much lower contrast but better viewing angles.

Automated Effulgence Limiting (ABL) 0.001
This Idiot box has peachy height brightness in SDR. It'southward well-nigh as bright as the Sony X90J, but not as bright equally the Hisense U8G. In that location's no noticeable variation in pinnacle effulgence with different content, which is great.
We measured the SDR brightness after calibration in the 'Custom' Moving picture Mode, with Brightness at max, Contrast at '90', and Color Tone set to 'Adept 1'.
If y'all want a slightly brighter paradigm, the 'Vivid' Picture Style with Contrast at 'Max' results in a slightly brighter image, but this mode is less accurate.
Local Dimming No
Backlight Directly
Although the Sony X85J uses a direct-lit backlight similar to the Sony X90J, there'southward no local dimming characteristic. The video is for reference only, so y'all tin can see how the local dimming feature on other displays compares to one without local dimming. If you prefer something with local dimming, and so wait into the TCL five Serial/S546 2022 QLED.

Automatic Brightness Limiting (ABL) 0.001
The Sony X85J has decent peak effulgence in HDR. Information technology's vivid plenty to deliver an bear upon HDR experience with most content, but minor highlights aren't bright enough to stand out the way the director intended.
Unfortunately, the Tv doesn't follow the EOTF curve properly, equally most scenes are brighter than they're supposed to be. It's not as bad every bit the Hisense U8G, simply it'southward not ideal if you care about an authentic image. It too cuts off sharply at the TV's peak effulgence, resulting in a loss of fine details in bright scenes.
If you want to make HDR content brighter and don't listen losing prototype accuracy, modify to the 'Bright' Picture Mode, and set Dissimilarity to 'Max'. These settings outcome in a much brighter prototype, as yous can see in this EOTF plot.
We measured the HDR brightness in the 'Custom' Picture Mode, before calibrating the Television, with Brightness at max, Dissimilarity at '90', and Color Tone set to 'Good 2'.

The effulgence in 'Game Mode' is identical to the 'Custom' Motion-picture show Mode. The Television still doesn't follow the EOTF properly, but this isn't every bit much of an result, as about games have an pick to accommodate the HDR brightness.

l% DSE 0.151%
5% Std. Dev. 0.856%
5% DSE 0.106%
The Sony X85J has very good grey uniformity, just this tin can vary between private units. The sides of the screen are a flake darker than the center, but there's very little dirty screen consequence, nifty for sports fans. Almost-dark scenes look even better, with no noticeable issues at all.
Native Std. Dev. 0.742%
Std. Dev. w/ Fifty.D. North/A
The unit we tested has excellent blackness uniformity, but this can vary between units. There's a flake of cloudiness in the screen, which you can't reduce as at that place's no local dimming, merely this isn't very noticeable in most content.
Colour Washout 29°
Colour Shift 36°
Brightness Loss 37°
Black Level Raise 10°
Gamma Shift xvi°
Unfortunately, as expected of a VA-type console, the Sony X85J's viewing angles are disappointing. Colors stay accurate to a wider bending than the Hisense U8G, but dark shades expect done out at a narrow angle. A Boob tube with an IPS-type console, like the LG NANO90 2021, is a meliorate choice for a wide seating arrangement.
Notation: We've seen some reports that the 43 inch model has an IPS panel in some regions. If this is the example, we expect it to have much better viewing angles but worse contrast.
Screen Cease Semi-gloss
Full Reflections 5.7%
Indirect Reflections 0.7%
Calculated Direct Reflections 5.1%
The Sony X85J has decent reflection handling. The semi-gloss finish reduces the intensity of straight reflections a fleck without smearing them beyond the screen. Bright lights tin can all the same be distracting, only overall nosotros don't expect visibility to be an consequence in most environments.
White Balance dE ane.06
Color dE 1.72
Gamma 2.21
Color Temperature half dozen,614 K
Movie Mode Custom
Color Temp Setting Expert one
Gamma Setting 0
Out of the box, the Sony X85J is remarkably accurate. Gamma is very close to our target of ii.2, and the white residual is nearly perfect. There are some inaccurate colors, especially highly saturated dejection, just they're close enough to the targets that we don't expect nearly people to notice them. Note that the exact accurateness out of the box can vary betwixt units.
White Residue dE 0.31
Color dE 1.45
Gamma 2.twenty
Colour Temperature half-dozen,512 K
White Rest Calibration 10 point
Color Calibration No
Calibration improved the white residuum and gamma to nigh perfection, but as there'south no color calibration on this TV, we weren't able to correct any of the color issues.
Y'all can run into our recommended settings here.
Nosotros didn't notice any issues upscaling 480p content like DVDs.
720p content, including about cable Television set stations, is upscaled well by the Sony X85J, with no noticeable issues.
Like most TVs we've tested, 1080p content looks almost as good as native 4k content.
4k content is displayed perfectly, with no noticeable bug.
This is a 4k TV that won't accept an 8k signal.
Like about TVs on the market, the Sony X85J uses a BGR (Blue-Greenish-Red) subpixel layout instead of the traditional Red-Green-Blue layout. For video content, this doesn't cause any bug, but it causes text clarity bug with some programs when used every bit a PC monitor. You can read more about this here.

DCI P3 xy 89.89%
DCI P3 uv 95.40%
Rec 2022 xy 65.42%
Rec 2022 uv 71.16%
The Sony X85J has a great color gamut. It can display nearly the entire DCI P3 color space used past near current HDR content, but it falls brusk on highly saturated greens, although this won't be very noticeable with well-nigh content. It as well has okay coverage of the wider Rec. 2022 color space, but it's non as good every bit the Hisense U8G.
The X85J we tested displays a wider color gamut than the Sony X90J, which is unexpected. This tin vary betwixt units, though, and the difference isn't very noticeable. We constitute that the X90J has better tone mapping, and in person, with existent content, the X90J looks better.
Normalized DCI P3 Coverage ITP 81.5%
x,000 cd/one thousand² DCI P3 Coverage ITP 40.4%
Normalized Rec 2022 Coverage ITP 61.7%
ten,000 cd/one thousand² Rec 2022 Coverage ITP 30.6%
The Sony X85J has decent color book. It'due south limited by the incomplete color gamut and, like most LCDs on the market, blues aren't every bit brilliant as other colors. Thanks to the high dissimilarity ratio, this Telly can display dark, saturated colors well, merely not also equally the Hisense U8G.
Color Depth 10 Bit
Carmine (Std. Dev.) 0.082
Green (Std. Dev.) 0.109
Blue (Std. Dev.) 0.077
Grey (Std. Dev.) 0.089
The Sony X85J has fantabulous slope handling. In that location's some banding in darker shades, peculiarly greens, but information technology'southward non very noticeable with most content. It has a less powerful paradigm processor than the Sony X90J, and it doesn't have a smoothen gradation feature or other options to remove banding.

There are no signs of temporary image retention on our unit, but this can vary.
Permanent Burn-In Risk No
Nosotros don't expect VA panels to experience permanent paradigm retention, as the VA panel in our long-term exam appears immune.
Move
80% Response Time 4.0 ms
100% Response Time 11.7 ms
The Sony X85J has a great response time, resulting in very clear motion, with negligible blur behind fast-moving objects. Transitions in night scenes look better than near VA panels, but there's still some black smearing behind dark objects. There'south very little overshoot in any transition.
Flicker-Gratis Yes
PWM Dimming Frequency 0 Hz
The Sony X85J uses direct (DC) dimming to dim the backlight. Like the Sony X850G, there'due south some noise at very depression backlight levels, but this isn't noticeable at all, and the backlight never turns completely off. It's dissimilar from the Sony X90J, which uses Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) to dim the backlight. PWM can carp some people, as it can cause centre fatigue or headaches.
Optional BFI Yes
Min Flicker For 60 fps 120 Hz
60Hz For lx fps No
120Hz For 120 fps Yep
Min Flicker for 60 fps in Game Mode 120 Hz
This Tv set has an optional backlight strobing feature, commonly known every bit black frame insertion (BFI), that tin reduce the amount of persistence mistiness. Like the Sony X90J, information technology can only flicker at 120Hz, which can cause duplications when watching 60Hz content. Annotation that our scoring is based but on the refresh rates that back up BFI and don't reflect how effective it is.
Move Interpolation (30 fps) Yeah
Motion Interpolation (sixty fps) Yes
The Sony X85J has an optional movement interpolation characteristic that can improve the advent of lower frame-rate content. Subjectively, information technology seems to perform well, but we did notice some artifacts in busier scenes.
Frame Agree Time @ 24 fps xxx.0 ms
Frame Agree Fourth dimension @ 60 fps five.0 ms
Due to the fast response time of this Television receiver, at that place is some noticeable stutter when watching movies. It's mainly noticeable in slow panning shots. If stutter bothers you lot, enabling motion interpolation tin assist to reduce it, but this can introduce the lather opera effect, which some people don't like.

The Sony X85J has outstanding low input lag, which is especially important when gaming or for employ as a PC monitor. It'southward a tiny scrap slower than the Hisense U8G merely a chip faster than the Sony X90J. The input lag outside of 'Game Manner' or with move interpolation is significantly lower than the Sony X90J, though we're non certain why. The update for variable refresh rate support has started rolling out, but we haven't retested it still, so we don't know how well it performs. We expect it to be like to the Sony X900H, which shows slightly increased input lag with VRR agile.

Update 01/28/2022: Some users have reported that this Telly occasionally skips frames when playing 23.976fps content, like Blu-rays. We tested information technology simply didn't find any frame skipping or judder problems.
Update 11/24/2021: We rechecked 4k @ 120Hz support on this Tv set. Unfortunately, like most other TVs nosotros've tested in 2021, it can't display 4k @ 120Hz signals properly. The vertical resolution is cut in half, resulting in a 3840 x 1080 interlaced signal, then text isn't displayed properly. Nosotros tested this previously, and it was working intermittently, merely now it's consistently not working.
The Sony X85J supports most common resolutions, except 1440p, which requires a forced resolution. Blush 4:4:4 signals are displayed properly in near supported resolutions, which is important for clear text from a PC. 4k @ 120Hz signals aren't displayed properly, though, and text isn't clear.

The Sony X85J doesn't support 4k @ 120Hz and Dolby Vision at once, so you have to choose betwixt them past changing the HDMI Point Format setting. This TV doesn't support Machine Low Latency Mode (ALLM), just information technology recognizes when it'southward continued to a Sony PlayStation 5 and automatically enters 'Game Way'. The variable refresh rate feature wasn't available when we tested this Telly, merely it has since received an update that adds it. We wait it to perform similarly to the Sony X900H.

The Sony X85J has a decent frequency response. Similar most TVs, the depression-frequency extension (LFE) is high, as information technology tin't produce whatever deep thump or rumble. In a higher place the LFE, the frequency response is very balanced, resulting in clear dialogue. Information technology can get very loud, but there's a bit of pumping at max volume.
